I am amused at the thought of Nabokov using hairpins! :o)

In his youth, he could have grown his hair long! But in adulthood, he probably wouldn't have needed hairpins.)

I have mid back length hair and don't think I have ever used one! :o)

I've never used hairpins either. But recently I watched a film about a Swedish female artist, "Hilma," and I loved the hairstyles so much that I wanted to do one myself.

If I want my hair up I tend to use hair slides and clips.

This ancient word means "without a headgear." For married peasant women, appearing without a headscarf was considered downright indecent. To this day, the Russian language still uses the word "опростоволоситься", meaning "to have found oneself in an awkward situation."
